In a road-rage incident, several youths today shot at a bus driver near Nangali village on the Fatehgarh Churian road in broad daylight here today. The injured was taken to hospital where his condition is stated to be serious. The unidentified youths fled from the scene while firing in the air.
The accused got angry when the bus driver failed to give them passage on the Fatehgarh Churian road.
Senior police officials of the Amritsar rural police reached the spot and started investigations. A case has been registered against unknown youths in this connection, said the police authorities.
The injured was identified as Gujinder Singh of Heir village. He was taken to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital from where he was referred to a private hospital. His condition is stated to be serious.
As per details, Gujinder Singh, driver of Baba Budda Bus Service owned by a senior Akali leader, was going towards Fatehgarh Churian after taking passengers from the interstate bus terminus. The youths, travelling in an SUV, were repeatedly honking, seeking a passage. But due to the traffic rush and the single- lane road, the driver was finding it difficult to give side to them. The accused got infuriated, they overtook the bus and stopped the SUV in the middle of the road. As the bus stopped, they pulled Gujinder out of the bus and thrashed him before shooting him. They later fled from the scene while firing in the air. The passengers in the bus did not dare to stop the armed youths. The incident occurred at around 3.20 pm.
The Amritsar rural police chief, Parampal Singh, said this was a road-rage incident. A case was registered following the statement of the conductor, Resham Singh. Parampal Singh said the CCTV footage of nearby areas was being looked into to trace the accused.
