Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu today launched the super suction machines in the old city area to clean the sewerage before the rainy season. He visited five spots to inspect the functioning of the machines.
MLAs Om Parkash Soni, Inderbir Singh Bolaria, Raj Kumar Verka and Sunil Dutti among other Congress leaders accompanied Sidhu.
Speaking on the occasion, Sidhu said the sewer lines in the city were not cleaned for the past 20 years. The residents face inconvenience during the monsoon season as sewer water accumulates in their houses and shops. The situation is same in all other major cities of the state”. He assured that the government will clean the sewer lines in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Mohali and Bathinda before the monsoon.
“The residents of these cities would get respite from the annual harassment in the rainy season,” Sidhu said.
He alleged that the 90% sewer pipes were blocked in the city and the previous government, led by SAD, did not show concern towards it. He informed that the government gave approval to buy 20 new suction machines. In Ludhiana, the work would begin tomorrow.
Speaking on the issue of potable water, Sidhu said, “We have issued Rs 114 crore to uplift the infrastructure of potable water. As many as 28 tube wells will be made functional soon in the city. The garbage dump will be relocated to address the problems of the solid waste management.”
Congress leaders visited Guru Ram Das Colony, Chintpurni Chowk, Dhab, Batala road and New Amritsar.
