Special school students win laurels in Amritsar

Defying all odds, two special students of Ibadat Special School here made the city proud by winning medals in the athletics category at the Special Olympics Bharat event held in Maharashtra.
Two students, Ankita Jain and Harman Preet Singh, won medals for themselves in the national championship powerl ifting under Special Olympics Bharat.
Ankita Jain (30) won a gold medal in the combine -bench press and the dead lift event while Harman preet Singh won a bronze medal in the bench press category and a silver medal in combine – squat, bench press and the dead lift event.
Out of seven students representing the state, two children were from school. These winners have been training hard at the local gym under the guidance of experts. Both of them suffer from intellectual disability.
Ankita, who has been with the institution for long, said, “I am very happy. I like lifting weights. This was the first time that I had gone alone.” Instructors here at the school had to make regular phone calls to make sure that both of them were following their diet and routine. Mohit Kapoor, president of the school, said, “They were going from Jalandhar to Kolhapur with representatives of the competition. We had to ensure that regular phone calls were made to check their diet and routine.”
“These children are moody, a lot had to be done for them,” added Kapoor.
