The much hyped project of smart bins, introduced by the Municipal Corporation (MC) during the SAD-BJP regime, has faced an end even before its beginning. The two bins installed at Majitha Road and Hakima Gate under the pilot project are lying defunct.
The space meant for bin at Majitha Road is now being used as a dumping site. Under the scheme, the entire garbage lifting and dumping was to be converted into a mechanical affair under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. These bins, installed with a lid and thick and durable bag, had a sound capacity, capable of storing 1,800 kg of garbage.
Earlier, the MC had floated tenders to install 64 smart bins at 32 points in the city, but these have failed to materialise. According to information, some issue failed to attract any private company. However, MC officials claim two firms had shown interest, but their officials entered in some tussle. Finally, the MC decided to cancel the tender. With this move, the smart bins are now a distant dream for residents.
Municipal Health Officer Raju Chowan said, “I am not aware about the status of the tender. There might be some issue. I will look into it on Monday.”
