Finally, Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu directed the district administration to make arrangements to shift the garbage dump from Bhagtanwala and install a solid waste management plant. It was the long pending demand of Bhagtanwala residents and the Congress, in its election manifesto, had assured them to do the needful.
According to information, the authorities concerned have suggested a chunk of land on the Amritsar-Jalandhar road. Sidhu has confirmed that the land would be acquired soon for the dump.
It is worth mentioning here that residents of Bhagtanwala area have been agitating for years. Sidhu had assured them that he ensure shifting of the dump and solid waster management plant to some other location. Earlier, the government had shortlisted Bhagtanwala area to set up the plant.
Residents had been urging Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to take up this issue on a priority basis because it posed a health hazard for those residing near the garbage dump. The government was also urged to hold a survey to ascertain the health of residents. The Saanjhi Sangharsh Committee of residents had organised a massive protest that continued for months opposing the proposed solid waste management plant.
