Rs 8 lakh robbery case cracked, 5 held in Amritsar

Amritsar, July 28

The police today arrested five persons in connection with the sensational Rs 8.84 lakh robbery case.

The arrested persons have been identified as Gurdip Singh alias Tony and Varinder Singh of Sultanwind village, Bhupinder Singh alias Bata of Gurnam Nagar, Sultanwind road, Pradeep Kumar of Kapoor Nagar and Palwinder alias Paras of Mandir Wala Bazaar, Sultanwind road. Rs 4.31 lakh have been recovered from their possession.

Police Commissioner SS Srivastav said two of their accomplices, including Tony’s son, were absconding and raids were on to nab them. He said with the help of a CCTV footage, the police managed to identify an accused of Sultanwind area. This development led to the arrest of other accused as well.

It may be recalled that a petrol pump employee, Narain Das, was robbed by armed persons in broad daylight near a branch of the State Bank of India on National Highway 1 on Monday. Three armed youths had decamped with his bag containing cash that he was going to deposit in the bank, a stone’s throw away from the filling station.

Das sustained a sharp-edged weapon injury when he resisted the attempt of the robbers. The accused also fired several gun shots during the incident.

Some of the onlookers gave chase, but seeing the accused firing in the air, they panicked and gave up the idea of chasing them.

Preliminary investigations revealed that two of the accused had conducted a recce of the petrol pump. The robbers planned the loot for 15 days before they struck. They knew that the petrol pump employee would be carrying a hefty cash on Monday due to bank holidays on Saturday and Sunday, said the Police Commissioner.

The police produced them before the court and got them on remand for further interrogation. “We hope to recover the remaining amount besides cracking more robbery cases. Their modus operandi suggests they may have committed more such crimes,” said Srivastav.
