Amritsar, August 25
MC employees, who have been protesting over the delay in the disbursement of their salaries, today announced to gherao the residence of Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday. The employees, led by Sanjhi Sangharsh Committee, have been on pen-down strike for the past 17 days. They have been seeking a meeting with Sidhu.
Meanwhile, a faction of the union reached Sidhu’s residence and submitted a memorandum to his office staff.
Vinod Kumar Bitta, general secretary of the committee, said, “We will not call off our strike until Sidhu meets us. We want to discuss our issues with him. The delay in salaries is not new. The MC has been facing financial crisis due to wrong policies of the government. Sidhu should meet us. We have decided to gherao his office.”
Earlier, the committee had decided to gherao Sidhu’s residence on Friday but the administration had imposed Section 144 of the CrPc in the city in wake of CBI court’s decision on Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.
The protest is going on since August 8. The office staff has boycotted the work but field staff hasn’t. The MC has released the salary of June, but that of July is still pending.
