Proclaimed offender held

Amritsar: The Lopoke police have arrested a proclaimed offender wanted in an year old murder case. He was identified as Balkar Singh of Khuh Kangawala village. A patrolling team of the police received a tip-off that Balkar was standing at Kohali village bus stop. A raid was conducted and the accused was nabbed. The murder case against Balkar was registered in June 2016 and he was declared PO by the court. TNS

Mobile seized from jail

Amritsar: The Central Jail authorities have confiscated a mobile phone from the possession of a jail inmate, identified as Jagjit Singh, a resident of Kotla Suraj Lohar village. The seizure was made during a surprise check. The police have registered a case. TNS

Seminar on GST

Amritsar: A seminar on Goods and Service Tax (GST) was organized at the conference hall of Guru Nanak Bhawan, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) in collaboration with the office of Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Amritsar. Heads of various teaching and non-teaching departments and administrative staff of the university were present.Professor Hardeep Singh, coordinator, presided over the seminar while Vinamar Gupta, CA, delivered the talk and interacted with students, teachers and officials of the university on various aspects of the GST.He said, “This regime has vastly impacted the social, economic and technical environment of business in India.” TNS

ATM robbery bid

Tarn Taran: Residents of village Sarali Khurd, 10 km from here, thwarted a bid of armed robbers to rob the ATM of the State Bank of India late on Thursday evening. The branch is situated on the Tarn Taran-Patti road in the village. The robbers had to open fire to deter the villagers. DSP Sohan Singh said a case under Sections 457, 380, 427, 511, 506 and 336 of the IPC, and 25, 27 ,54, 59 under the Arms Act had been registered. Sukhpreet Singh of the same village, who works as the night watchman for the bank, said around seven robbers disconnected the CCTV camera and uprooted the ATM. They were trying to load the ATM in one of their two vehicles when villagers gathered, forcing them to run away. The are trying to establish the identity of the accused. oc

3 kg of poppy husk seized

Tarn Taran: The Patti sadar police have arrested one Balwinder Singh of Talwandi Budh Singh Wala village and has recovered three kilogram of poppy husk. Sub-Inspector Harpal Singh said the accused was on foot when he was nabbed by a police party. A case under Sections 15, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against him. oc

Purse snatched

Amritsar: Two unidentified motorcycle-borne persons snatched a woman’s purse on Thursday evening. The victim along with her daughter was returning after shopping. The incident occurred at Beas. The complainant said her purse contained gold jewellery, two mobile phones, Rs 10,000 and other valuables. The Beas police have registered a case. TNS
