Amritsar, July 29

The process of replacing the District Transport Office (DTO) with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has kicked off in the district.

To revamp the Transport Department in sync with directions of the state government, the DTO has started the process of collecting information and dispatching the same to its state headquarters.

The government had announced that the RTO would replace the DTO in 32 automatic driving test tracks in the state.

Under the new arrangement, the powers of the District Transport Officer would be given to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM).

As many as 10 RTOs are likely to be set up in the state. These RTOs will come up in Amritsar, Bathinda, Ferozepur, Patiala, Sangrur, Gurdaspur, Ludhiana, Mohali, Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur.

District Transport Officer Kanwaljit Singh said the head office had sought information regarding the availability and requirement of hardware and infrastructure at the SDM office.

He said they received the same from the SDM office and forwarded it to the officials concerned.

He said more detail regarding the requirement of more staff and other details would be clear once the notification was issued.

Under the proposed plan, the SDM will be authorised to handle the registration work of private vehicles and issuance of driving licences. The move is aimed at curbing corruption.

Under the plan, a decision has already been taken to scrap 22 posts of District Transport Officer, four posts of Regional Transport Authority and eight of Motor Vehicle Inspector.
