Planning new strategies to nail gangsters and former terrorists, the Punjab Police has started updating their records and collecting details of their Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, bank accounts, etc.The DGP, Punjab, has asked police officials to get all these details of gangsters and former terrorists lodged in jails or currently on the run.
These records will be submitted to the DGP office while details would also be kept with district police chiefs and police commissioners of the respective districts. Highly placed sources in the department said all SHOs have been directed to meet the family members and relatives of the gangsters and take all details about their bank accounts and finances.
“The main idea is to smash the financial route and dry up funding which the gangsters and former terrorists are getting. It has been felt that in order to break their back, it is essential to shatter their financial routes,” the sources said. The SHOs would also find out information about their passports, so that they cannot escape abroad after committing a crime. The bank account details and Aadhaar card numbers would help in ascertaining from where they were getting funds to operate the gang.
Police Commissioner SS Srivastav said the Punjab Police was taking a number of measures to nail the gangsters but refused to divulge the details.
