Keeping a watch: Police and paramilitary personnel stand guard outside the BSNL office at Ranjit Avenue on Monday. Vishal Kumar

Amritsar, August 28

The police remained on their toes to thwart any untoward incident in the aftermath of the announcement of quantum of punishment to controversial Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh today.
He was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment by the CBI court at the Rohtak Jail.
Though the influence of the dera head is less in the Majha region, the district administration and the police took no chance and elaborate security arrangements were in place to counter any backlash in view of the judgement.
The police and paramilitary forces were deputed outside government offices while personnel were also deputed at various chowks and bazaars. A company of the Border Security Force (BSF) and Punjab Armed Police (PAP) was deployed. The situation was peaceful. — TNS
