Amritsar, July 8
Haryaval Foundation started a plantation drive — ‘Rukh Lagao, Manukh Bachao’, — in the presence of political leaders, social workers and intellectuals during a function here today.
The event was attended by MLAs — Sunil Dutti from Amritsar North, Harminder Singh Gill from Patti and Dr Dharmveer Agnihotri from Tarn Taran — and PPCC secretary Ranjit Singh Rana Gandiwind.
Harminder Singh Gill assured the foundation of donating two lakh saplings along with three guards. Dr Avtar Singh, director, Amandeep Hospital; literature critic Dr Joginder Singh Kairon; Dr Waryam Singh Bal; Dr Indu Arora; Punjab and Haryana Bar Council vice-president Karanjit Singh; advocate Ravi Bhullar and others were present on the occasion.
Paramjit Singh Gandiwind, patron, Haryaval Foundation, said, “We had started tree plantation drives around seven years ago. At present, we have a nursery spread over half-an-acre where 25 different kinds of saplings are prepared and distributed free of cost among the people.”
He said that the foundation had adopted 250 schools in Tarn Taran and Amritsar districts in 2016 where saplings were planted. “We do not forget the saplings after plantation as our volunteers visit these saplings on a regular basis to give water and take care of these,” said Gandiwind.
Speaking on the occasion, various speakers expressed their worry over the depleting green cover. Inaugurating the event, Sunil Dutti said the government would offer every possible support to organisations working for tree plantation. He exhorted the city residents to adopt one tree each and take responsibility of its care.
Dr Dharmveer Agnihotri said over the past few years, the level of awareness among the public on this issue had increased.
