Amritsar, August 25
The haphazard parking outside several markets in the city has been causing traffic jams. Unavailability of enough parking lots is the main reason behind the menace as people park their vehicles wherever they find space, be it roads or vacant plots.
Traffic jams are a common sight at Mall Road, Hall Bazaar, Cooper Road and Lawrence Road. Parking alongside roads near shopping malls too is common as people, just to save their time, prefer to park their vehicles on roads.
A city resident, Paras, said, “The problem is at both ends. Adequate parking lots are not there, but even if a designated place is available, people don’t want to utilize them. Such is the case with Lawrence Road. A number of vehicles are parked outside shops everyday.”
Stressing that there is a need for people to understand their responsibilities, Jatinder Singh, a shopkeeper, said, “Not only the authorities, but also residents should come up to eliminate the parking woes. It becomes impossible to drive on such stretches where vehicles are parked.”
