Amritsar: The Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation on Monday called for nominations from Punjab for its prestigious 21st Mahaveer Awards. The individuals and institutions providing selfless service to the voiceless and poor in the country will be eligible for the award. The awardees will be selected by a panel of eminent personalities representing different domains. The panel will be headed by MN Venkatachaliah, former Chief Justice of India. The foundation is a non-government organisation that has been bestowing the prestigious Mahaveer Awards on outstanding personalities and organisations for recoganising their work in propagation of non-violence and vegetarianism, education, medicine and community and social service. The award in each category carries a cash prize of Rs.10 lakh, a citation and a memento. The nomination form can be downloadable from www.bmfawards.org. The last date for applying is August 31, 2017. Youth dies in road mishap
A youth was killed in a road mishap that took place near Chawinda Devi village on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Davinder Singh (17) of Maan village. The accident took place when an unknown vehicle hit his motorcycle. He died on the spot. The police have booked an unidentified person in this regard. TNS

One held with intoxicants

The Beas Police have arrested a person for allegedly possessing intoxicant tablets and capsules. The accused has been identified as Balbir Singh alias Sabi of Shero Bagha village. ASI Heera Singh said the accused was arrested during patrolling from the Shero Bagha drain. The police have recovered 200 capsules and 200 tablets from his possession during checking. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused. TNS
