With the local bodies elections round the corner, leaders of several political parties have begun making ground in the city. The Congress, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are busy gearing up, while activists of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are awaiting announcement of the district office-bearers. Congress leaders are making efforts to prove their popularity to assert their claim to party ticket. The SAD and the BJP councillors are holding meetings to save their seats.
According to information, most of the AAP candidates, who fought Assembly elections, are currently not active in politics. AAP state convener Bhagwant Mann had dismissed the party structure a few months ago, but did not announce the new office-bearers.
AAP volunteers are not aware whether or not the party will contest the MC elections.
However, they claim in the public that the party will contest the local bodies as well as the panchayat elections.
Kuldeep Dhaliwal, former vice president of the AAP, said, “We are waiting for the announcement of new leaders. Bhagwant Mann is likely to announce the office-bearers of the district within a week. We will put up a fierce fight in the elections. Congress’ fake poll promises will be exposed.” The AAP had got a poor response in the Majha region where all of its 25 candidates were defeated in the Assembly elections.
