The Municipal Corporation (MC) faces a dearth of young brigade. Since no recruitment has been made in several departments for years, most of the employees are above 40 and they can’t do work involving sound physical strength.

Officials say the employees above 40 can’t climb 30 feet high poles to remove illegal advertisements and to repair lights.

Such works suffer. Similarly, a large number of regular employees are not tech-savvy. They don’t know computer operations.

Earlier, the MC had hired a company that used to provide outsourced workers for various departments of the civic body. The company had employed young employees, who were technically sound and physically fit.

Now the government has canceled the provision to hire any employee or company through contract. The Sanjhi Sangarsh Committee of the MC employees says they are overburdened due to the shortage of staff. They have been demanding recruitment of employees for several years.

“The government has been claiming to digitalised the record of the MC and provides e-services. But the old employees are not well trained and no one has been recruited for this job for years. Moreover, young employees are required to do physical work in the field to implement the rules. The government should recruit new employees”, said a unionist.

MC Estate Officer Jaswinder Singh said, “Young employees are required to climb the poles, seize vends and dismantle illegal structures. Our employees are working hard and facing health issues due to overburden. Our department needs more employees.”
