Kapurthala jail inmate escapes from hospital in Amritsar

An undertrial convicted under the NDPS Act escaped from Guru Nanak Dev Hospital while dodging the policemen yesterday in the morning. The accused has been identified as Shiv Kumar alias Shanky, a resident of Avtar Nagar in Jalandhar.

On the basis of a complaint by the Superintendent of Central Jail, Kapurthala, the Civil Lines police registered a case against head constable Pargat Singh and constable Harpreet Singh for negligence while on duty.

ASI Baldev Singh, in-charge Majitha Road police post, said Shiv Kumar Shanky was convicted for 10 years in a case of drug smuggling. On the intervening night of July 29 and 30, he was taken to the GNDH for treatment.

Pargat Singh and Hapreet Singh were deployed to keep a watch on the convict. The convict slipped away from the hospital early in the morning.

According to the information available, Shiv Kumar was lodged in Central Jail, Kapurthala, for 10 years in a case of drug smuggling. He complained of pain in his chest and was rushed to the GND Hospital.

Early in the morning, he requested the cops to open his handcuff as he wanted to go to the washroom. Following a request from Shiv Kumar, the policemen opened his handcuff. He went to the washroom and managed to flee from the hospital premises. The cops tried to search for him but in vain. Finally, they informed the senior jail officials and the local police. The city police have registered a case under section 224, 223 and 222 of the IPC in this regard.

It is worth mentioning that this is not the lone case. Earlier also, the jail inmates had escaped in a similar manner from the hospital. Several are still absconding after escaping from the hospital.

Case registered against constables
