Acting on a tip-off, the CIA staff raided an illegal hookah bar where hookahs were served to teenage children here late last evening. They found around five children who were found smoking hookah. They were later handed over to their parents with a warning.
The police have arrested six employees including the manager of the restaurant. They were charged under the Juvenile Justice Act (Care and Protection of Children Act, 2015). Besides, action has been taken under prohibition of tobacco products and other charges.
Those arrested were identified as Sachin Singh of Gumtala, Harpreet Singh of Waryam Nangal village, Mohit of Pawan Nagar, Danish Singh of Guru Arjun Dev Nagar, Putlighar, Kapil Singh of Guru Amar Dass Avenue, Chheharta, and Amardeep Singh of Pandori Waraich village.
Tejbir Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police (crime), addressing mediapersons here today said the hookah bar was operational in a restaurant in the Ranjit Avenue area. The owner of the restaurant, identified as Sumit Kapoor, was missing since the raid. He said the police found four hookahs and flavoured tobacco from the spot. Interestingly, the owner had made two hookahs out of liquor bottles also. He said more such raids would be conducted in the future also.
The district administration has imposed a blanket ban on hookah bars. However, such hookah bars are running secretly at several places. “Nobody is allowed to run hookah bars and the Police Department is very strict about it as consuming tobacco could further lead to drug abuse,” he pointed out.
He said the police had registered a case under Section 77 of the Juvenile Justice Care and Protection of Children Act, Sections 4, 6 (B) of the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce Production Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003, besides Section 188, IPC, for violating ban orders imposed by the district administration. — TNS
