Gangster held with country-made arms

Amritsar, September 13

The Amritsar rural police today claimed to have arrested a gangster, Jaideep Dhawan alias Baba, of Bhikhiwind, now residing at Batala Road in Amritsar.

The police seized a country-made .12-bore pistol with five bullets from his possession besides a stolen motorcycle. He belonged to Gurjit Singh alias Ladda gang wanted in many criminal cases in Punjab and other states.

Parampal Singh, SSP, Amritsar rural police, said Dhawan had killed Gurbir Singh of Chak Mishri Khan village in May 2016 while Navdeep Sharma was seriously injured in the suspected gang war that occurred at the Gumtala bypass on May 21, 2016. Dhawan along with Gurjit Ladda, Sahib Singh of Himmatpura, Moneypal and Amandeep Singh of Guru Ki Wadali were booked by the city police on charges of murder and attempt to murder.

Dhawan along with his gang members had shot at Navdeep Sharma’s brother Raghu Sharma at Sur Singh village in Bhikhiwind in Tarn Taran on May 19 last year and a case had been registered in this regard. Dhawan was wanted in both these cases.

The SSP said the police and various other agencies were looking for Dhawan and his other gang members who had been evading arrest for long. He said interrogation was underway to know the whereabouts of his accomplices.
