First instalment released to construct toilets in Amritsar

Amritsar, August 2

As many as 7,025 beneficiaries of the open defecation free (ODF) scheme under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan have got the first installment of the grant to construct toilets at their homes in the city. Municipal Corporation (MC) officials have asked them to complete the toilet construction to get the second installment.

Senior officials of the health wing of the MC have said the beneficiaries should construct the toilets to get the second installment released.

As per the information, as many as 8,181 households sans toilets were identified in the city. To curb the practice of open defecation, the government gives around Rs 8,000 in two installments to the beneficiaries to construct toilets.

Dr Raju Chowan, Municipal Health Officer, said,“The government had transferred Rs 5,000 each in the bank accounts of 7,025 beneficiaries. We request them to complete the construction soon and get the remaining Rs 3,000 as second installment. Beneficiaries have to click the photograph after the completion of construction. We will upload that photograph on the web portal of the department and government will release the second installment.”

MC officials said the health wing would send notices to the remaining 1,156 households, who did not start the construction. The MC had conducted the survey and found that the 8,181 households in the city don’t have toilets. On the directions of the Central Government, the city should be open-defecation free to get the status of Smart City. The officials claimed that they have been making efforts to make the city open-defecation free.
