Next time you purchase gold jewellery with a hallmark from a local jewellery firm, the chances are that you might get a lesser pure ornament if the yesterday’s raid is anything to go by.
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chandigarh, today raided a jewellery firm which was allegedly hallmarking gold jewellery without any recognition from the BIS.
Following a tip-off, a six-member team of the BIS, headed by Praveen Kumar and SC Das, both directors, raided Manikgold Computerized Testing Lab located at Giani Market at Katra Mohar Singh area in the walled city and found it hallmarking gold articles in an illegal manner. The firm is owned by Rajinder Singh.
The team seized a laser hallmarking machine, laptop and hallmarked jewellery. Praveen Kumar said the BIS would file a case against the firm. BIS’ deputy director general AK Sharma said as per the norms, only BIS recognised hallmark assaying centers were authorised to use the BIS hallmark.
