Amritsar, July 21
Vivek Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Ferozepur Division, has said the Amritsar railway station will be decongested once the work to upgrade the Chheharta railway station completes. Due to congestion, trains at the city railway station are made to halt on the outskirts of the city.
Kumar was in the city yesterday to take stock of various development works. The Ferozepur division has already approved the development of Bhagtanwala and Chheharta into satellite railway stations to decongest the Amritsar station. He said it would take some time to remodel the Chheharta railway station, besides adding two more platforms to the Amritsar station. The Chheharta railway station that falls between Amritsar and Attari is being developed with an investment of Rs 61 crore.
At Chheharta station, a new railway line, platforms and reconstruction of the administrative building will be carried out. In addition, two new washing lines would also be laid and upgrade of its infrastructure would also be carried out.
The Chheharta station, which is about 4 km from the Amritsar railway station, is used to load and unload merchandise which earns it a monthly revenue of Rs 9 crore. This facility would be shifted to the Khasa railway station so work at Khasa passenger terminal is halted.
Besides, there are plans to develop another satellite railway station at Bhagtanwala where the work is yet to take off.
Meanwhile, the DRM was unhappy over the dismal sanitation at the city railway station as filth was visible on platforms and also railway tracks. He pulled up the officials concerned for neglecting cleanliness.
He said the remodelling of the Amritsar railway station would be carried out by Station Development Corporation. Under this, parking lots would be revamped with separate lanes for arrival and departure. Dedicated lane for three-wheelers and a multi-storey parking would be raised for optimum utilisation of space.
