Several areas of the city today remained waterlogged after moderate rain.Experts and residents claim that the government had covered open drains in the past, which has now become an obstacle in disposal of rainwater. However, the authorities have spent crores of rupees on covering the open drains in the city but all these efforts prove to be insufficient. Hour-long downpour is enough to submerge many roads for four to five hours in the city.Though the original purpose of these open drains is to carry rainwater, but over the years, these are carrying domestic and factory waste. In the absence of any check by the authorities, residential areas and industries have emerged along with the open drains. Residents started dumping domestic and factory waste in the open drains.Local politicians pressed the authorities to cover these drains to get the votes of people live near the drains. Now, almost all open drains in the city are covered. These drains, along with the outer ring road, are being covered by the National Highway Authority of India to construct a service lane.Last year, the SAD-BJP-led government spent a huge amount to beautify the Heritage Street but due to a faulty drainage system, the street is flooded with rainwater.Experts believe that water accumulation in the Heritage Street will damage tiles and other infrastructure.Charanjit Singth Gumtala of the Amritsar Vikas Manch has raised the issue with the Municipal Corporation and district administration, but no one has shown any concern.
