Members of various employee organisations under the banner of the Punjab Government Theka Mulazam Joint Action Committee will gherao the Vidhan Sabha on June 20.
They have been demanding regularisation of their jobs and a hike in the salaries of cooks and workers.
Parveen Sharma, president, Mid-Day Meal Office Employees-Cook Workers Union, said, “We will take out a march to the Vidhan Sabha holding black flags. We met Chief Secretary Karan Avtar Singh on May 9 who had assured us of a meeting with the CM over regularisation of their services . It has been over a month since we met the Chief Secretary but there is no progress on the issue.”
Union’s district President Prem said, “Mid-day meal cooks are getting Rs 1,200 monthly whereas their counterparts in Haryana are getting Rs 2,500. Besides, they were hired for 10 months in a year. Many cooks have been asked to carry out the work of satiation workers in many schools. It is a violation of labour laws.”
The employees have been demanding that the cooks must get a minimum wage of Rs 7,715 and employment for 12 months.
The union maintained that there were more than 60,000 workers working under the Union Government-sponsored Mid-Day Meal scheme in the state.
