Amritsar: Irked over the remarks by BJP chief Amit Shah, who referred to Mahatma Gandhi as a ‘chatur baniya’, Congress workers on Monday burned his effigy at the Hall gate. Protesting and demanding an apology from the BJP leadership, they said that the episode showed how the ruling party respected national heroes. Congress leader Jugal Kishore Sharma, said, “It is a direct case of disrespecting a national hero, Father of Our Nation. These words should not have been used for such an inspiring international figure. The PM should himself take some action against it.” TNS
Paramjit Singh, son of Sucha Singh, a resident of Palla village in Mehta lodged a complaint against Hoshiarpur resident Ramesh Lala of Dhad Dhawana Khurd village for allegedly duping him of Rs 5 lakh. He alleged that Ramesh used to work as a travel agent. He took Rs 5 lakh from him to send his sons to Italy on work permit and assured him for their permanent settlement there. He alleged that when he demanded his money back, the accused did not return it and used abusive language against him. TNS
The Cantonment police have booked a Delhi-based couple Avinash Sharma and his wife Bevi for allegedly defrauding a local resident, Arjun Singh, on the pretext of getting his son recruited as a junior engineer in the railways. The accused took Rs 10 lakh from him, he alleged. The police have registered a case under Sections 420 and120-B of the IPC. TNS
