Amritsar, October 8
A general body meeting of the Amritsar Chemists’ Association was held today during which various problems faced by members were discussed. The association also organised an expert lecture on the GST for the benefit of its members.
During the meeting, Vishal Sharma and Deepak Sehgal were elected as president and general secretary of the association, respectively. The election was held unanimously.
Sehgal said, “Chemists are facing problems as Punjab Pharmacy Council has not renewed the registration of around 5,000 pharmacists in state.”
“The council has reasoned that these members had studied out of Punjab,” he said adding that, “These pharmacists have been running pharmacies for many years and such action is unjustified.”
Meanwhile, members of the association also complained of police harassment. “As per the Drug Act, only drug inspectors of the Health Department are authorised to check pharmacies,” Vishal Sharma said while adding that harassment by police officials was more in the rural areas.
He said both the issues would be taken up with authorities concerned.
