AMRITSAR: A sarpanch owing allegiance to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) was beaten to death allegedly by a group of Congress workers in Cheath Kalan village under Attari assembly constituency in Amritsar district, police said on Wednesday.
Chattiwind station house officer (SHO) Amarjit Singh said an FIR was registered against four persons. Police say the incident may be the fallout of political rivalry. There have been cases of sarpanches being killed due to alleged political rivalry in Punjab recently.
According to police, Gurpinder Singh Laali was engaged in a verbal duel with the suspects last evening which resulted in a scuffle. Laali passed out during the clash and was rushed to a hospital where he died, the SHO said.
Former Punjab deputy CM and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal condemned the killing of the Akali sarpanch. He said in a statement issued in Chandigarh that the death of Laali was the result of the vendetta unleashed by the Congress-led state government on Akali workers.
