4 months on, GNDU yet to get regular VC in Amritsar

Amritsar, August 3

Even after four months, the state government is yet to make an appointment of Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU). The former VC, Prof AS Brar, had resigned in March this year.

Though SK Sandhu, an IAS officer, is officiating as the VC, the delay in regular appointment is dampening the working of the university. Most of the faculty members feel that the delay is costing the university as nothing concrete can be introduced under the temporary arrangement along with ensuring proper working of the university.

Sources say decision on many important files is awaiting the approval of a regular VC. Many new courses can only be introduced after the formal VC joins. The budget for various activities is also affected due to power delegation system under the present arrangement.

Professors opine that the present scenario has impacted the response to university admissions. Students are also being harassed, they say.

Dr AS Soodan, president of the Guru Nanak Dev University Teachers’ Association, said, “It is the need of the hour that a regular appointment is made at the earliest. We as faculty are suffering due to this arrangement. There are a number of pending decisions and important files to be addressed.”

“Employees too are suffering. The newly–recruits too are not getting their share of facilities. At times, even travel allowance is not provided. The state government is urged to appoint a regular VC,” he added.
