The city police today suspended two cops, Inspector Arvinder Singh and Inspector Harvinder Singh, in connection with the search and a raid at Chief Minister Camp office at Court Road here.
They were reportedly suspended following the orders of the Director General, Punjab Police, while the investigations in the case have been marked to IG, Bathinda Zone, Mukhvinder Singh Chhinna. He is likely to reach Amritsar tomorrow for the probe.
Earlier, Police Commissioner SS Srivastav had shifted the two cops to the Police Lines and marked an enquiry into the case. The role of a senior police official has also come under the scanner. Inspector Harvinder Singh was posted as the SHO, Gate Hakima, while Inspector Arvinder was posted as in charge of the CIA staff.
The incident has left the Congress leaders fuming and they approached the higher police authorities in Chandigarh and demanded a high-level probe into the incident and suspension of the accused cops.
Congress leader Bawa Singh Sandhu, OSD to Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and in charge of the camp office, had expressed his displeasure over the development. Member Parliament Gurjit Singh Aujla and MLA Raj Kumar Verka had also demanded a high-level probe into the episode and demanded immediate action against the erring cops.
They alleged that some SAD leaders were accompanying the police party during the raid. They said some people had approached them while alleging that they were being framed by police officials in a fake case of theft of cement bags.
The police officials had claimed that they were looking for a suspect booked in a theft case. They had received a tip-off that the accused was hiding in the camp office and therefore they had gone to the place.
