Amritsar, June 1
An 18-year-old girl identified as Simran alias Shallu, a resident of Sultanwind village, committed suicide by jumping into the Uppar Bari Doab canal near the Chatiwind area on yesterday evening.
The incident came to light when a passer-by noticed that a girl was jumping into the canal. He immediately sounded an alert. Surinder Kumar, constable with Indian Reserve Battalion, who was attached with the police in view of heightened security arrangements due to the upcoming anniversary of Operation Bluestar, also jumped into the canal to rescue her.
However due to darkness, he could not locate her. Simran’s body was fished out by divers on Thursday afternoon. Neeraj Kumar, SHO Sultanwind police station, said family members had not lodged any complaint against anyone. The police had initiated action under Section 174 of the CrPC. — TNS
