134 applicants for GNDU VC position

As many as 134 academicians have applied for the post of Vice Chancellor (VC) of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU). Yesterday was the last day for accepting applications.

Sources say 25 employees of the university are among the applicants. The government has appointed a five-member committee, headed by former Punjab Tractors CMD Chandra Mohan, who played a vital role in designing the first-ever indigenous tractor of the country, would meet to discuss the applications next month in Chandigarh. Other members of the committee are Dr BS Dhillon, VC, Punjab Agricultural University; RS Khandpur and former director general of Pushpa Gujral Science City. Chief Secretary and Secretary, Higher Education, are the ex-officio members.

The next VC is expected to be announced in the first fortnight of the next month. The university will forward the list of candidates to the committee to shortlist the names for the appointment of VCs of Punjabi University, Patiala, and Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar.

The post of VC at the GNDU went vacant after Dr AS Brar, appointed by the previous regime, quit his position after the formation of the Congress government. After that, Anurag Verma, Secretary, Higher Education, was given the additional charge of the GNDU and the Punjabi University in the capacity of VC.

With current academic session concluding with final examination on May 30, it has become necessary to appoint VC to steer way for the next academic session. Meanwhile, applicants have started lobbying top politicians for strengthen their claim.
