The stage is set for the revival of Amritsar Children’s Park on the Company Bagh premises which had been lying in a neglected state for around a decade. Earlier, the Archaelogical Survey of India (ASI) had taken over the park and had not allowed any repair or reconstruction activity in it.
Now, following an initiative undertaken by Local Bodies Minister Anil Joshi, the project has got the clearance. The Amritsar Improvement Trust (AIT) has been entrusted with the responsibility to refurbish and beautify the landscape of the park at a cost of Rs 1.40 crore.
AIT superintending engineer Rajiv Sekri said the trust is funding the development of the park from its own sources. He said a Chandigarh-based company has been given the responsibility to develop the park. The development projects comprise the area of the park and the closely situated mini zoo which has been lying vacant and abandoned after wild animals were shifted out.
Workers were seen engaged in civil work at the space for water body, proposed for boating purpose in the park. Boating will be revived on about 300 metre-long water body. A sitting place covered with poly carbonate sheets has been created. While a cafe with a seating arrangement on the first floor is also being created. The park already has a parking area. Besides, an attractive landscaping area for holding picnics would also be made. There is a provision for a toilet also.
The abandoned area of the Amritsar zoo will be developed as an artificial zoo where wild animals made of plastic will be displayed in cages. While big cages will have playing activities for children. An attractive toy train would also be operated in the zoo area.
It has been years since two children’s parks in public gardens have been lying unused. One is in the Company Bagh and another is at Gol Bagh. Broken and rickety recreational apparatus like swings, see-saw and others were removed from the Company Bagh many years ago but in the Gol Bagh, these are still lying unused.
It would be an amusement park for the city’s children and it is expected to be thrown open to the public by the end of this year.
