About Amritsar Airport
Amritsar Airport is popularly known as Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport. It got its present name after Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru and also the founder of Amritsar City. The airport is ideally located 11 kilometers apart from the northwest side of Amritsar. The correct location of the airport is on Amritsar-Ajnala Road, near to the village Raja Sansi, so also known as Raja Sansi Airport. Apart from the city of Amritsar, the airport also serves some of the western districts of Himachal Pradesh and southern districts of Jammu and Kashmir.
It was in 2005, the arrival terminal of the Amritsar airport was established and from March 2006, the departure terminal started operation. Another terminal was inaugurated in 2009. At present, the airport handles around 100 commercial flights a week – both international and domestic. From December 2009, Amritsar Airport has been considered to be the fastest growing airport in the country.

Connectivity to Amritsar Airport

The bus stand of Amritsar has ideally located 22 kilometers away from the airport. You can get local and tourists buses to reach the airport. It will take around 24 minutes to reach from the bus stand to the airport and vice versa. Punjab state government is planning a regular bus service between the airport and other parts of the city. If it happens, the passengers will find it easier to reach the airport or to their respective destination. Air India is also planning to start a regular bus service from the airport to Jalandhar and vice versa.
The railway station is around 23 kilometers away from Sree Guru Ram Dass Jee (Amritsar) Airport. As the station is connected very well with the other part of the cities, it will easier for the passengers to reach the airport. The government is also planning to start a monorail service, which will connect the airport with Harmindir Sahib (Golden Temple) and also the railway station in Amritsar.

Terminals in Amritsar Airport
There are two terminals in Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport in Amritsar. Let’s go on detail…
The terminal 1 is exclusively meant for domestic flights. It handles all domestic flights connecting various cities in the country. You can get here all facilities, making the most memorable travel experience in your lifetime. Prominent flights such as Indian Airlines, Air India and Jet Airways provides their services. You can also find various stores of miscellaneous items at the terminal 1 of Sree Guru Ram Dass Jee Inernational Airport.
Terminal 2 is the one which handles the international flights. Major Service providers like Jet Airways Amritsar Flights, Turkmenistan Amritsar Flights, Uzbekistan Amritsar Flights, Air India Amritsar Flights, Singapore Airlines and TransAero. Bored with the long waiting process, then the terminal 2 has various options to make you refreshed. There are stores, snack bar counter, milk bar and juice bar counters. The new integrated terminal building of Amritsar airport was inaugurated in February 2009. This building is glass built and is well equipped with all the modern facilities. You can get here x-ray baggage inspection and conveyer system, flight information display system, common use terminal equipment and CCTV. The terminal is spread over 40,175 square meters and is a combination of modern and Indian designs.
This terminal building is capable to occupy 1.46 million passengers and during peak hours, it can afford around 1,200 passengers. You can find here 30 check-in counters, four x-ray scanners, 26 immigration counters, 10 custom counters, 12 security check booths and four conveyor belts. From the earlier capacity of ten aircrafts, now the apron has been extended to hold a total of 14 aircrafts. Both the departure and arrival areas consist of duty-free shops. You can also find foreign currency exchange service, book store, restaurants and other shops at the departure hall.
CAT II ILS became operational on 23 December 2011 and reduced the visibility requirement for an aircraft landing at Amritsar Airport on Runway 34 from the existing 650 metres to 350 metres benefiting airlines in terms of increased safety and avoiding diversions to other airports resulting in better operational and environmental efficiency.The runway is currently going through repavement and upgrade of its strength that will be completed on April 30, 2017 thereby resuming 24 x 7 operations. CAT III installation will be completed in Sep 2017.
